Oxygen is essential for the functioning of the body: it is what lets the body produce energy. Throughout this process elements are released which are known as free radicals. The downside is that when they are in great numbers, these molecules start the ageing of the body’s cells, particularly of the skin.
Oxygenation, a double-edged process
Free radicals are useful to the body: they participate notably in the sound functioning of the immune system and regulate the activity of certain genes. However, when there are too many of them, for example due to stress, an unbalanced diet or even unprotected sun exposure, they can also attack molecules like proteins and lipids and even DNA. Consequence: the cells don’t function correctly any longer and the tissue age prematurely. In any case, the effects of free radicals are most visible on the skin.
There are a great number of elements in the environment which provokes an increase in the production of free radicals in the body:
You now have another good reason why you should reduce your alcohol intake, quit smoking, eat healthily, stay zen and protect yourself from the sun: to keep a young and beautiful skin for longer!
