The problems linked to skin ageing manifest themselves in different ways. As well as changes of an aesthetic nature, it is possible to observe the appearance of lesions which are more or less benign, or to feel discomfort.
The markers of skin ageing
We are all capable of recognising the signs of ageing on a face, without knowing about the origin of these changes in shape, texture and even colour.
Wrinkles are the main characteristic of skin ageing. They first appear in the areas of facial expression. That is the reason why we call these « expression wrinkles ». They are caused by the repeated contraction of the muscles located:
- on the forehead (lion wrinkles, frown lines)
- around the mouth (laughter lines, circumoral lines)
- near the eyes (crow’s feet)
Wrinkles that appear in the less solicited areas like the cheeks are often due to the environment and more particularly to the prolonged and repeated exposure to ultraviolet rays.
Brown spots or age spots arise on the face, the neck, the chest, the arms… These clusters of melanin, the molecule which pigments the skin, particularly appear after too frequent, unprotected exposure to the sun.
Skin sagging starts when the skin cells start to produce less collagen and elastin, the molecules which ensure the skin’s firmness and elasticity.
Eye bags are due to bad lymphatic and blood circulation or the displacement of the supra-orbital fat towards the lower eyelid.
Dark circles are the result of bad circulation under the eye.
Dehydration manifests itself through tighter, drier skin which tends to pull. The phenomenon is due to a lowering in the effectiveness of the hydrolipidic film of the skin, which is no longer able to maintain a sufficient level of hydration within the body.
