To prevent the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots and other marks of skin ageing, you have the power to act upon the aggravating factors of skin ageing, over half of which are linked to our behaviour and our environment.
Factors to watch
- Nutrition. If it’s unhealthy, it can cause oxidative stress, a factor of skin ageing. It is best to choose food rich in fruits, vegetables, pulses and whole grains containing nutrients with anti-oxidants properties essential for the renewal of skin cells. Also go for fatty fish and vegetable oils: the essential fatty acids are excellent for the skin.
- Sleep. At night, the skin cells regenerate. When you sleep too little, or badly, this process of regeneration, essential for the health and beauty of your skin, cannot happen properly.
- Exposure to UV rays. UV rays are produced by the sun and they attack the heart of skin cells and damage them, thereby accelerating the process of skin ageing. It is therefore important to protect yourself by using high sun protection factors all year round on sunny days - on every occasion, even off the beach and outside of the summer period.
- Stress. If not controlled, this can cause the excessive production of cortisol in the blood. This hormone, if present in too great a quantity in the body, increases the production of free radicals, molecules which attack the sound functioning of the cells, particularly that of the skin. It also leads to a diminution in the quantity of collagen produced by the skin. The skin thereby loses its elasticity.
Finally, pollution and tobacco are also acknowledged factors of ageing: they put us in contact with toxic elements, internally as well as via the skin, which damage the cells.
